Blog 357, 10/1/16 - Ryder Cup Singles Predictions

mcilroyreedPatrick Reed vs Rory McIlroy
Oh brother. What a statement Reed can make. If he leads for most of the round, the red on the scoreboard will no doubt inspire those behind him. If McIlroy takes him out like he did Rickie Fowler at Gleneagles two years ago, however, who knows how that might put a charge in the Europeans. An argument could have been made for saving Reed for a more likely win. But if he does manage to beat McIlroy, it will surely be a devastating blow for the Europeans from which they cannot rebound. McIlroy will be just too strong for Reed though. Europe wins 2&1
stensonspiethJordan Spieth vs Henrik Stenson
You have to give this one to the Swede who has played consistently well throughout the week despite going 1-3. You know Spieth won't go down without a fight though. Tough battle, fascinating match. Europe wins 2&1

pietersholmesJB Holmes vs Thomas Pieters

Holmes won a point this afternoon which will have buoyed him, but Pieters is just riding the wave. It will be interesting to see how he fares without McIlroy at his side, but I suspect he'll do just fine. Europe wins 4&3.

rosefowlerRickie Fowler vs Justin Rose

Both are 50% for the week - Fowler 1-1, Rose 2-2. Rose has perhaps shown the better form, however, and will do enough to win. Europe wins 2&1.

By now the Europeans lead the match 10.5-9.5

cabrera bellowalkerJimmy Walker vs Rafa Cabrera Bello
Now we get into those middle matches that are so hard to predict. If Reed and the other Americans are posting red, it will do wonders for Walker. That said, he's a big boy who doesn't necessarily need outside help. Cabrera Bello proved at the WGC Matchplay in Austin earlier this year and also this week that he relishes matchplay and will not easily be beaten. I just give it to Walker though. US wins 2&1
garciamickelsonswingPhil Mickelson vs Sergio Garcia
A heavyweight battle that will be fraught with emotion, great facial expressions, and riveting action. Garcia has just 1.5 points from four games so far, and lost to Mickelson and Kuchar this afternoon (in partnership with Martin Kaymer). Both will want to beat the other so badly, but I think Garcia will take it. Europe wins 2&1
westwoodswingmooreswingRyan Moore vs Lee Westwood
Westwood is having a nightmare and will go to bed ashen and embarrassed after this afternoon's misses on the greens. I hope he has a putting lesson before his 12.10pm tee time, or Moore will make light work of him. Westwood will obviously be determined to justify his friend Darren Clarke's faith in him, but I think his confidence is so low he'll have a very hard time. US wins 4&3
sullivansnedekerBrandt Snedeker vs Andy Sullivan
Snedeker has shown a lot of good form this week going 2-0, while Sullivan lost his one and only game on Friday morning (with McIlroy). Sneds will prove too strong. US wins 3&2

Match score - US leads 12.5-11.5

wooddjohnsonDustin Johnson vs Chris Wood
Wood won his only game so far - a foursomes win this morning with Justin Rose, but DJ is in the form of his life and has just too many guns. US wins 5&4

willettkoepkaBrooks Koepka vs Danny Willett
Koepka has done well so far, going 2-1, while Willett (0-2) is having a miserable time of it trying to overcome a hostile crowd and indifferent form. The Masters champion has not been helped by the dubious play of his partners (Kaymer, Westwood), however, and will be determined to win a point. Europe wins 2&1
kaymerkucharMatt Kuchar vs Martin Kaymer
Kuchar (2-1) is just making too few mistakes to be beaten by someone who has made plenty so far. Kaymer is 0-3 and, like Westwood, will find it hard to win and justify his captain's pick. US wins 4&3

fitzpatrickzjohnsonswingZach Johnson vs Matt Fitzpatrick
Going by my predictions, the US will have retained the Ryder Cup by now so this match won't matter. If it does though, you have to give the edge to the two-time major champion. Don't count the Englishman out though, The boy's got talent to burn. US wins 1up

It's impossible to know at what point it will happen, and who will score the winning point but, after a strong start by the Europeans, I think the US team will prove too strong in the middle of the order and at the end, eventually winning 15.5 - 12.5.

But I could be wrong.
