Craig Roth and son Cody won their second WSGA Parent/Child Championship Friday, shooting a Chapman Strokeplay seven-under-par 65 to beat 45 other teams and win by four at the Riverbend Golf Complex in Kent. The pair won their first title in 2012 at Twin Lakes in Federal Way.
Under the Chapman format, both players hit from the tee and then played each other's tee shot, before choosing which ball they wished to complete the hole with.
Having reached the turn in two-under 34, the Roths moved up a gear on the back shooting five birdies for an inward 31. Their only bogey came on the par 4 9th.
"This is even better the second time," said Craig who added the difference on the back nine was that he was hitting some good approach shots while Cody, about to start his sophomore year at Western Washington, was making all the putts. "It seems to be a pattern," he said. "Dad doesn't putt."
The Roths weren't the only past champions to do well. The father-daughter team of Jacqueline and Terry Bendrick who won last year finished fourth; 2009 winners Brandon and Richard Cardwell were seventh; the father-daughter team of Ravae and Ruben Canas, winners in 2011, tied for ninth alongside Doug and Roger Pierce who won in 2014. And the 2013 champions, Jason and Mark Aspelund finished tied for 13th.
