Blog 349, 7/8/16 - Murphy and Gorbahn advance to US Amateur from Loomis Trail

vinniemurphykalebgorbahnSmithers, BC's Kaleb Gorbahn (right), a sophomore at Holy Cross College in Indiana, and Sumner's Vinnie Murphy (far right), a sophomore at Grand Canyon University, will play in the US Amateur Championship after advancing from yesterday's 36-hole qualifier at Loomis Trail in Blaine.
Both players shot seven-under 137 to book their places at Oakland Hills in Michigan in August. Ryan Books from East Wenatchee also finished on 137, but was eliminated after two extra holes of a playoff.
jakekoppenburgThree Bellingham golfers were in the field. Former Western star and a volunteer on the current coaching staff, Jake Koppenburg (left), finished tied for 13th on 145. Viking Junior Cody Roth tied for 24th on 149, and former Red Raider and recent winner of the 2A state championship, Nick Nolan -  Gonzaga-bound this fall, was T30 on 150.
A number of current and former Western students also played. Chris Hatch from Mukilteo finished alongside Roth on 149. Jeff Marcum, like Nolan, was T30 on 150. Dylan Stensland tied for 36th on 151. Current junior Michael Butler tied for 42nd on 152, as did Brett Johnson.
Kyle Schrader was T49 on 155, Jack Kelly tied for 55th on +14, and Mark Strickland who played in the US Amateur at Atlanta Athletic Club two years ago, was 67th on 169.
