Blog 345, 5/5/16 - Vikings Finish 18th at NCAA Super-Regional

michael butlerWestern Washington's season came to an end yesterday when it finished 18th out of 20 teams at the NCAA Division II Super-Regional played at the 7,242-yard University Course in Las Cruces, NM. The Vikings finished the three rounds on 45-over-par 897, winding up 45 shots behind winner Chico State.
Nineteenth after a disappointing opening round of 24-over 308 on Monday, WWU did manage to make up some ground on Tuesday with a much-improved three-over 287, the fifth best score of the day. Chris Hatch shot a fine one-under 70, with Brett Johnson and Michael Butler (right) both shooting 72.
The momentum was lost for Wednesday's final round, however, when the team retreated with an 18-over 302.
Johnson and Butler were the Viking's best players of the tournament, both finishing tied for 48th on ten-over 223. Next best was Hatch whose Tuesday round was sandwiched between a 76 and 79. He finished on 12-over 225 and tied for 63rd. Jeff Marcum was 14-over and tied for 78th, while Cody Roth came in tied for 100th on 21-over 234.
Teams advancing to the NCAA Div. II National Championship in Colorado May 17-21 besides Chico State were Oklahoma Christian, Dallas Baptist, California Baptist, and BYU Hawaii.
Sam Johnston of Oklahoma Christian won medalist honors on seven-under 206.

hannah drakeThe women's team fared little better finishing ninth out of 12 teams at the NCAA II West/South Central Regional at 5,931-yard Brookside Country Club in Stockton, CA, despite shooting an opening seven-over 295 to end the first day in second place. A second round 12-over 300 dropped the team to fifth and a closing 316 saw them finish 35 shots behind winner Tarloeton State.
Hannah Drake (right) was top Viking finishing tied for 18th on seven-over 223. Kristen Hansen was tied for 24th on 227, Jenn Paul tied for 40th on 231, Brooke Branigan tied for 48th on 235, and Audrey Orem was T62 on 243.
Dallas Baptist and West Texas A&M will join Tarleton State in the NCAA Division II National Championship at CommonGround GC in Denver, CO May 18-21.
Tarleton State's Isabell Jimenez Perea was medalist shooting six-under 210.
