The WWU men's golf team got the spring season off to an encouraging start when it finished T3 out of 11 teams at the East/West Bay Area Invite in Livermore, Calif., Tuesday.
Scoring at the Greg Norman-designed Wente Vineyards course was high thanks to strong winds that saw the entire field fail to break par for the 54 holes, and medalist - Saint Martin University's Ryan Pickthorn - finish on four-over 220.
Top Viking was Brett Johnson who finished tied for fifth on ten-over-par. It was the Oregon State transfer's fourth top-five finish in his six tournaments at Western. Chris Hatch was tied for tenth on 12-over, while Jeffrey Marcum tied for 14th on 13-over.
The two other Vikings in the field were Cody Roth who tied for 31st on 243, and Willy Scholten who came in tied for 40th on 247.
Though a reasonable start to the spring given the conditions, Western Washington will be disappointed at having lost its overnight lead. The team finished Monday's play on 30-over 606, holding a five-shot lead over St. Martin's and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps who were tied for second.
Today's round of 312 (and a three-round total of +54 918) was therefore something of a let-down, so the team will be looking to make amends when it returns to California next month for the Cal Baptist Spring Break Collegiate at Eagle Glen GC in Corona.
