Blog 315, 8/12/14 - Strickland Bows Out of US Amateur

markstrWWU Viking Mark Strickland (right) bowed out of the US Amateur Championship Tuesday after following his opening round of 76 with a seven-over-par 79 on the Riverside Course at the Atlanta Athletic Club in John's Creek, GA.
Strickland, who will be entering his senior year of eligibility at Western next month, had his father on the bag today and played solid enough golf on the front nine, reaching the turn in one-over 37. He had a rough back nine, however, carding two double-bogeys, three bogeys and a lone birdie in an inward half of 42.
Strickland completed the 36 holes of strokeplay on 12-over 155. Sharing medalist honors were Georgia's Lee McCoy and Oklahoma's Taylor Moore who both finished on eight-under 135. The University of Washington's Cheng-Tsung Pan was tied for third three shots behind.
The top sixty-four finishers qualified for matchplay beginning Wednesday morning.
