Couples Withdraws From Players
Last week after shooting 76, 71 and missing the cut at the Quail Hollow Championship in Charlotte, NC, Fred Couples said he was exhausted, going home to rest, and unlikely to play in this week's Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass even though he had committed.

Sure enough, Freddie withdrew last night (made official this morning) citing his notoriously bad back as the problem. The 50-year-old Seattleite had played six straight weeks; three on the regular tour (Shell Houston Open, Masters, Quail Hollow), and three on the Champions (Cap Cana, Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am, Legends of Golf).
Hardly surprising the old man was exhausted; that's 19 rounds of competitive golf in a month and a half. Mix in all the travel and you have one punishing schedule. I'll be happy if I play 19 rounds this year...just in Bellingham!
Washington's hopes at Sawgrass will therefore rest on Spokane's Alex Prugh who is currently 38th in the FedEx Cup standings, and Ryan Moore who made an equipment change recently switching from Scratch Golf's SB-1 blade to the company's EZ-1 cavity backs in order to hit the ball higher, and swapping the $25 putter he used at the Masters for Scratch Golf's prototype blade model. Moore is 60th in the race for the FedEx Cup.
